SUMMARY:Mark-Making with Cochineal Ink Workshop with Porfirio Gutiérrez
LOCATION:1251 Kearns Blvd · Kimball Art Center\, Park City\, UT
DESCRIPTION:About Join us for a special workshop with visiting artist\, P
orfirio Gutiérrez\, whose work will be featured in Between the Lines. Ma
rk-making is a fundamental artistic practice through which materials bec
ome gesture\, image\, and expression. In this workshop\, participants wi
ll use natural ink from cochineal to create original compositions on tex
tile. Together\, the group will explore how a single material can produc
 e a range of colors through changes in chemistry\, concentration\, and a
pplication. Rather than focusing on traditional dyeing techniques\, the
workshop investigates pigment as a contemporary artistic medium-one that
carries memory\, material knowledge\, and history. Participants will ex
plore the visual and material qualities of cochineal ink while consideri
ng the relationship between material\, process\, and mark-making. Drawin
g from his artistic practice\, Porfirio Gutiérrez shares his approach to
working with cochineal as a living material-one that continues to evolv
e through observation\, experimentation\, and making. The workshop will
include: Introduction to cochineal as a pigment Exploring modifiers and
color variation Techniques for working with natural inks Creating an ori
ginal painting using cochineal ink Settingthe final work All levels welc
ome. This program is presented in conjunction with Land Art Week\, which
has been organized by the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and Powder Art Found
ation\, with additional programs presented at Kimball Art Center\, UMOCA
