A collage built from old memories. A row of watercolor landscapes. A ceramic sculpture titled Calling for Help. None of the work in Universal Power of Art was made to be shown. It was created to heal or process, and only afterward chosen to be seen. Universal Power of Art is an exhibition of work by nine artists connected through the practice of local art therapist Leann Dzemske, M.Sc., ATR, LPC, of HeART Revolution Therapy and Counseling. The exhibition opens during Mental Illness Awareness Week and remains on view from October 5 through October 30, a period that also includes World Mental Health Day on October 10. This exhibition is also a way to honor everyone navigating a mental health struggle in their own way, seen or not. Much of the work in the show is not for sale. Where a piece can be purchased, proceeds go to the artist directly or to a local nonprofit selected by the artist, among them the Mental Wellness Collaborative, which provides affordable office space to mental health providers in Teton County, so every purchase becomes a direct way to support mental health services in Teton County. Wyoming has ranked among the three states with the highest suicide rates in the country for years, according to the CDC, one reason that support matters as much as it does here.
