History Jackson Hole invites the community to celebrate national Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission to the Jackson Hole History Museum. Downstairs, enjoy the special exhibition Behind Linear Narratives: Indigenous Plains Ledger Art co-curated by Al Hubbard and Susan Durfee and presented in partnership with Central Wyoming College’s Native Voices. From 12:30 – 1 p.m., take the guided curator’s tour “What is Ledger Art?” with Al Hubbard (Northern Arapaho/Navajo) and learn about the art form from its early Indigenous history to contemporary expression, as well as current exhibition artists Terrance Guardipee (Blackfeet Nation) and Terran Last Gun (Piikani/Blackfeet). As a guest educator, Hubbard will lead activities with pre-scheduled 4th grade classes to learn about and create their own ledger art. Hubbard’s own artwork is also currently on display at Shari Brownfield Fine Art. Visitors are encouraged to view the History Museum’s outdoor mural Damma Newadaygwap Gay Nasoowazeet | Never Forget Our Language installed in partnership with Jackson Hole Public Art. The artist Nanibah Chacon designed and created the mural in consultation with Eastern Shoshone leaders, including Shoshone language preservationist Lynette St. Clair. The entire Museum will be open on this special day, including the special temporary exhibit Jackson Hole 1955: Kodachrome Images by Orson L. Arvin capturing a fascinating moment in Jackson Hole’s history, the valley during the post–World War II auto tourism boom, yet before the ski resort and rapid development began transforming the community in the 1960. Many thanks to event supporters Visit Jackson Hole, The Alpine House, and Wyoming Humanities!
